  • The tithe should truly be the first portion. By tithing you are saying, “God, you own everything and all I have comes from your hand. I recognize you as provider and sustainer of my life and I return the first portion of all that you give to me, as a testimony of my dependence on you.”

Paying your tithe on the gross amount (your total compensation) even after the taxes or other expenses have been taken out is still tithing if it is the first portion you set aside or the first check you write. You cannot control taxes coming off your paycheck first but you can control what you do with the income once it's in your possession.

In The Blessed Life, Pastor Robert used an example of having 10 one dollar bills. In the example, the tithe is equal to $1 (10% of $10). He asks the question, “Which one of the ten one dollar bills is the tithe?” The answer is, “The first one that is spent or given.” Therefore, if the first check you write is for the tithe, you are tithing the first portion you've been given.

However, you must be careful not to get caught up in legalism. God is not legalistic or difficult to please. He is full of grace and compassion. He knows the condition of your heart. As long as your desire is to obey the principle of tithing and do so to the best of your ability, be at peace, God is pleased with you and he will fulfill His promises to you.

  • The tithe as it was instituted by God in the Old Testament was for the purpose of taking care of the Levites and their families since they did not receive an inheritance in Canaan as did the other tribes. The Levites were given the responsibility of leading the nation spiritually by teaching the people to obey God's law.

Today, pastors and those who work in the church are the equivalent of the Levites of the Old Testament. The church serves as the tabernacle of God, or more accurately, the people are the body or the temple of God. Although people make up the church (body of Christ,) the physical building of the church is important, because through it we are able to fulfill God's plan of reaching the lost and take care of the family of God. People need to belong to a place where they not only receive God's Word and spiritual nourishment, but can also serve his body through their gifts and talents.

Another important aspect of the church being a physical place is that it gives God's people the ability to come together to worship and serve Him. In the Old Testament the nation of Israel was given numerous festivals throughout the year for the purpose of coming together and celebrating before the Lord. In the New Testament, we are encouraged not to forsake meeting together for the purpose of encouraging one another. (Hebrews 10:25)

It can be difficult to find a local church that is perfect. Actually, it's impossible. No church is perfect, nor can it be because it's made up of imperfect people. However, the benefit of belonging to a local church where you and your family can grow and mature is worth the effort of finding one. Don't give up looking for a church that is a Bible-believing church that will meet you and your family’s needs.

With that being said, the biblical model set for us is to return the tithe to the place where God has chosen to put his name. In the Old Testament, it was the Tabernacle, today it is the local church. Therefore, your tithe should go to a local church where you and your family belong. Giving to other ministries, such as this one, for the purpose of spreading the gospel is good and should be done with offerings.

  • If you will simply believe Jesus Christ paid for your sins as He died on the cross, then you can receive His gift of eternal life. The Bible says, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved’” (Romans 10:9–13).

Do you believe in your heart Jesus is the Son of God? Do you believe He came to this earth, lived as a man and died on the cross for you, and He rose again on the third day? If you answered yes, then you’re ready to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. Please pray this prayer aloud:

Dear Lord, I know I am a sinner, and I ask You to forgive me for all of my sins. I receive Jesus as my Lord and my Savior and give You complete control of my life. Thank you, Jesus, for saving me today! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, we are so proud of you and would love for you to email us and let us know! Be sure to mark today’s date and write it down in your Bible. This is the day of new beginnings in your life! We also encourage you to tell someone about the decision you have just made and get involved in a local church.
